The key to strong defense: without targeting systems there are no ion cannons, heavy graviton cannons, laser batteries or solar cannons.
Role
Targeting systems are the central requirement for advanced defenses: Ion cannon from level 4, Heavy graviton cannon from level 5, Positron lighter from level 8, and Interval cannon, Laser cannon battery and Solar cannon from level 10.
You need a Research lab at level 5 and Energy technology level 6 for it.
If you want to protect your planets with defenses, plan Targeting systems early (Defense, Digging in defense).
Background
Defensive targeting systems are needed to home in on targets. This technology improves with every level, thus increasing the chances to hit targets. The improvement of the targeting systems makes it possible to research new and more effective defense installations. That's why they are key in founding a solid defense strategy.
